Fishing

The best shore fishing is from the Normanville Jetty and Haycock Point. Most fishers head out into the gulf in small boats, which can be launched from the beach at Lady Bay and Normanville.

A long stretch of coastline

The wild Southern Ocean is a Fleurieu Peninsula fisher’s delight. This long stretch of coastline is just over an hour south of Adelaide and is full of stunning places to bait a hook. Drive to a beach, a riverbank, an estuary, some rocks or a salt-crusted jetty. You can let a charter boat take you right to where the fish are biting. You won’t go hungry!

Fancy jetty fishing?

Port Noarlunga is close to Links Lady Bay. At Rapid Bay, you’ll find kingfish, trevally, salmon and squid. There's salmon, squid and mullet at Victor Harbor or flathead and snapper at Port Elliot.

Bring your boat

Cape Jervis, where the ferry leaves for Kangaroo Island, has some great rocks where you can fish from for tommy ruffs. If you own a boat, launch it from Cape Jervis and fish for snapper, squid and tommy ruffs. There are also ramps at Normanville, Wirrina, Rapid Bay, Port Elliot and Victor Harbor.

Surf fishing

Iconic Kangaroo Island is visible on a clear day. Surf fishing is brilliant at Waitpinga and Parsons Beach. Catch salmon, mulloway, flathead and mullet in the morning and evening. Middleton is also another great spot for some big wave angling. The Bluff (Rosetta Head) at Victor Harbor offers rocks and jetty fishing for salmon, squid, rockfish, garfish, mullet and tommy ruffs. There’s more rock fishing at Petrol Cove and Granite Island (mullet, salmon, trout, trout and squid).

River fishing

Collect cockles in Goolwa (November to May) or pop around to the Murray Mouth for some salmon, trout, bream and mullet. Boat fishing for bream, salmon, trout, mulloway and flounder on the Coorong is unforgettable. In other rivers and lakes around Goolwa and the Coorong, you could also snaffle some yabbies, callop and carp.
